Leading with the Heart | Meet Oscar Vega, Principal of LaCoste Elementary Meet Oscar Vega, Principal of LaCoste Elementary Show Transcript my favorite part of the day my morning rounds which is morning Duty doing this and I don't want to use a term social butterfly but you know I I can't be very social so I do enjoy being around people I do enjoy having conversations with the kids kids with the parents with the staff I think that helps me out a lot I think something else that has also helped me out is just my diverse background whatever you do those of you who know Spanish do not we lose your language do not lose it keep your Spanish it's very important do you understand that English is my second language my family is from from Mexico City and I came here I was 5 years old not knowing any English but I I think it helps me in communicating with the kids and communicating with the parents but also Bridging the campus with the parents and and having somebody here on campus that the parents feel comfortable because a lot of times parents they don't attend the meetings why because everything's in English why because there's no 1 that could communicate with them you know anytime I have the opportunity to speak to the parents in Spanish and and I tell them like spread the word like I'm here everything we do we do it in Spanish and English we're here to to make sure you feel comfortable because a lot of the bilingual parents they do want to get involved they just don't know how or they don't feel comfortable if if you're able to put them at ease and you're able to make them feel comfortable and you make them feel valued they're going to be here so I know what it's like from firsthand experience and I enjoy helping I I really do it's that simple I just get pleasure out of helping others
